Summary:
Officer E.M. Belcher was slain by a sniper’s bullet On October 29, 1971. The shooting took place at the Electric Circus night club at 3140 S. Riverside Drive. The shooting occurred in the aftermath of an earlier incident at the club in which another man had been shot. Belcher was among the two dozen officers who had responded to the scene of the earlier shooting. The shot that killed Officer Belcher was fired from over 200 yards away from the roof of a nearby restaurant.

David Lee Nelson was later arrested for this murder. He was tried and convicted, and was sentenced to death. All death penalty convictions were later overturned in the state and Nelson’s sentence was commuted to life. He was paroled in the late 1980’s.
