Summary:
On March 27, 1935, Officer Joe V. Graham was off duty and on his way home when he was involved in a traffic accident at 25th and Market. Officer Graham noticed that the driver of the car, Dee Miller, was intoxicated. Officer Graham decided to arrest Miller for the offense.
As Officer Graham attempted the arrest, Miller began resisting, and bit Officer Graham on the tip of his right middle finger. Officer Graham was able to effect the arrest despite the minor injury. By April 1, Officer Graham hand began to swell as an infection set in. On April 11, Officer Graham was admitted to a hospital for emergency surgery and had the finger amputated. Officer Graham’s condition began to improve after the surgery, but the improvement was short lived.
A week after the surgery, Officer Grahams hand again began to swell. His fever shot up and his hand began to swell. He was admitted to the hospital but nothing could be done for him. Officer Graham died on May 10, 1935.
