Summary:
Officer William Vernon Welch died May 21, 1973 from a gunshot wound he had received several hours before. Officer Welch had walked into a robbery in progress at the Seven-Eleven store on Camp Bowie. The suspect was standing at the store counter when Officer Welch entered. The suspect turned and fired point blank, striking Officer Welch in the chest. The suspect, later identified as Edward D. Webb, then fled the scene on foot.

After initially falling, Officer Welch was able to rise to his feet and empty his revolver at the fleeing man. Officer Welch was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital where he died several hours later after surgery.

Edward D. Webb was a career criminal with numerous convictions and arrests ranging from shoplifting to rape. He was on parole when he murdered Officer Welch.
